Construction to transform University Library begins in November

New spaces for makers, collaboration, reflection, tutoring, studying and community will help students “learn more in the library.”
Oct 23, 2018

University of the Pacific is transforming its libraries into a modern, technologically equipped, learner-centered resource for 21st-century teaching and learning. Following a multi-year planning process that included students, faculty and staff in establishing shared goals, the construction phase of the William Knox Holt Memorial Library transformation is about to begin. Scheduled to commence in November, Phase One construction will prioritize improvements on the first and second floors. Architects and planners are now finalizing construction documents.

These improvements are part of the libraries' redesign plans to provide holistic and supportive learning experiences that reflect how students live and learn today.

What is happening in this phase?

First floor:

Bullet Innovation Commons Includes The CUBE, a digital wall, editing suites, experimental exhibit space and learning lab, staffed with dedicated expert assistance. The Pacific Technology Help Desk will be located nearby.

Bullet Learning Commons Includes group study rooms, open collaborative spaces, a cafe, computers, scanning and copying. The "Ask Us" Desk and Pacific Technology Help Desk Staff will be located nearby.

Second floor:

Bullet Reading Commons Includes group study rooms, individual study pods, individual study areas and computers.

Bullet Academic Commons Includes the Center for Teaching and Learning, Student Writing Center, and Student Academic Support Services, as well as study spaces and a learning lab.

Library availability during construction:
Although some areas of the first floor will be unavailable in November and December, the study areas will remain open until final exams conclude in December. The library will be closed during the winter break until classes resume in January to allow construction to go forward uninterrupted through the holidays.

The library will remain open during 2019 calendar year construction to ensure continued access to the book collection in the garden level (library lower level) and the study rooms, study spaces and study pods on the second floor. Phase One is anticipated to be completed January 2020.
